What is Cardano’s Current Channel Capacity?

Cardano’s channel capacity—or more specifically, its transaction processing capacity—varies depending on factors like block size, network performance, and ongoing optimizations. Currently, Cardano is designed to handle around 250 transactions per second (TPS) on its base layer. This TPS is not fixed, however, as the network is continuously evolving to improve scalability and capacity.

Cardano’s scaling solutions, such as Hydra, are intended to significantly boost channel capacity by enabling off-chain transactions. Hydra allows for creating layer-2 channels, where each Hydra head (channel) can handle up to 1,000 TPS, and theoretically, with many Hydra heads operating in parallel, Cardano could achieve millions of TPS. This dramatically increases the overall channel capacity of the network.

In short, the base layer currently supports about 250 TPS, but with Hydra and future optimizations, the channel capacity could scale massively, potentially supporting a much larger number of transactions across multiple channels.
